CARY, N.C. November 24, 2008 - SciQuest, Inc., the global leader empowering enterprises to realize the potential of strategic procurement, today announced that its customer Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University has been named to the InfoWorld 100 list. Virginia Tech was selected for its success in developing and implementing one of the largest and most far-reaching efforts to automate paper-based procurement and business processes in higher education. SciQuest's eprocurement platform was a key component of the University's procurement transformation.

"Procurement automation has the potential to radically improve services and drive efficiencies while generating enormous costs savings," said Tom Kaloupek, director of materials management at Virginia Tech. "It's not just about going online to purchase items, it's about implementing the right set of technologies and processes to provide greater insight and transparency into where, how and with whom money is being spent. We are pleased to have received this recognition for our team's success in making this a reality at Virginia Tech."

The InfoWorld 100 awards honor companies for IT projects that exemplify intelligent, creative uses of technology to meet business and technical objectives. To be considered, projects must use multiple technologies in innovative ways to serve well-defined business goals.

"Breathing new life into outdated operations, advancing business goals with inventive use of technology -- this year's winners demonstrate, once again, that innovative, business-minded IT is the lifeblood of successful organizations," said Jason Snyder, Senior Editor for InfoWorld.

Virginia Tech Turns to SciQuest to Support its Procurement Transformation
Virginia Tech sought to transform the procurement department from a processing center into a strategic leader focused on serving users and generating savings. The benefits of such a transformation would enable the department to reduce the costs of goods and services, free staff from paper-laden, time-consuming administrative processes and eliminate off-contract purchases. It would also empower Kaloupek and his team to aggregate Virginia Tech's enormous buying power to achieve savings and more favorable terms and conditions with suppliers.

To achieve this goal, Kaloupek looked for a procurement technology that could engage all participants - including faculty, staff and suppliers - in an online e-commerce marketplace and integrate with the University's existing financial systems to automate every step of the purchasing process from sourcing to settlement. User adoption was also a critical concern; the project would require more than 4,000 users to fundamentally change how they work - all without interfering with year-round, daily operations at the University.

"SciQuest's on-demand eprocurement solution provided the basis for our transformation because it encourages high user adoption - critical to any successful IT implementation - through an intuitive online shopping platform that allows users to easily search for and purchase the items they need," added Kaloupek. "SciQuest also integrates with our financial system SunGard Higher Education Banner, which enables us to streamline the workflow from purchase through approval and payment. With our new SciQuest-enabled ‘HokieMart' we are now managing more than $280 million in transactions per year."

"Virginia Tech provides another shining example of how strategic procurement can dramatically impact the bottom line, while driving innovation and progress," said Stephen Wiehe, SciQuest's president and CEO. "Opportunities to modernize the one function that can help relieve financial pressures can't be overlooked in today's economy. Tom and his team deserve this recognition because they are among a select group of leaders in higher education that is pioneering the use of best practices, technologies and talent from business and IT to bring this modernization to their institutions."
